CHINESE & SPORTS ACUPUNCTURE
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) Acupuncture
TCM Acupuncture is an empirical, time-tested medicine of thousands of years that comprises nutrition, acupuncture, moxibustion, Tuina, cupping, Guasha, and Qi balancing. TCM Acupuncturists are regulated, and are authorized to perform those modalities. Its use is a natural, safe and effective way to promote health, that treats the whole body and treats a wide range of diseases and ailments.
Acupuncture works with three fundamental principles; it reduces INFLAMMATION, increases CIRCULATION and alleviates PAIN. It does so by activating the blood, fluids, nerves and energy along the channels that traverse the length of the body. Research shows stimulating effects on the central nervous system triggering the release of chemicals into the muscles, spinal cord, and brain. These changes may alter our experience of pain via the release of pain killing chemicals such as endorphins and natural opioids or speed up the healing process via the release of immune system cells. By affecting the neurotransmitters and neurohormones of the body, acupuncture can have broad impacts on nerve impulses, organ function, and mental health as well. Acupuncture truly offers a full spectrum of healing!!
To that end, it is VERY important to be aware of the qualifications of a fully trained and registered acupuncturist (minimum 3 year Masters degree Acupuncture program and registered with the College of Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners and Acupuncturist of Ontario (CTCMPAO). Designations include R.Ac. (Acupuncturist) or R.TCMP (Acupuncturist and Herbalist).
Sports Acupupuncture or Motor point Acupuncture
Motor point acupuncture probably began in the 1970s with Dr C Chan Gunn, an anesthesiologist who found that inserting acupuncture needles into motor points on muscles (the place where the nerve attaches to the muscle) can cause a fasciculation (twitch response) which would reset the nerve and muscle causing relaxation of contracted muscle and an increase in strength.
Dr Vladimir Janda of the Prague School of Rehabilitation was a neurologist who said that the most overlooked type of muscle imbalance is tightness weakness. Overuse of muscles causes contraction and shortening of the muscle which over time accumulates and puts strain on tendons and joints causing pain and dysfunction.
Motor point acupuncture can reset contracted muscle to restore joints to their normal function while reducing or eliminating pain and tendonitis.
This technique has been used with great success for several decades by a relatively small number of acupuncturists and medical professionals, but we offer it here.
